Things To Look For When Choosing An Individual Health Insurance Company

Filed under: Insurance Agencies — admin at 8:37 am on Saturday, April 26, 2008

There are a plethora of Health Insurance providers online, most offering fairly competitive policies at decent rates. The sheer amount of choice makes it confusing when you’re trying to decide between companies, and if you don’t know what to look for you may miss out on a good deal, or worse, be stung by hidden costs or not receive the cover you paid for.

The first thing to look for when choosing an insurance company is to make sure that the terms and conditions are stated in a manner that is clear and easy to understand. A good company won’t try to befuddle you with jargon. Don’t be afraid to clarify certain points, and to get those clarifications in writing. This can save you a lot of pain and hassle in the long run.

You also want to make very sure that your company is not offering policies which they will then cancel if you get sick. It does sound ridiculous, but some companies will cancel policies if the holder becomes ill. Make sure the policy is guaranteed renewable and non cancellable. A company that tries to dump it’s holders when they need the policy they paid for is unlikely to be a good insurance partner to you in the long run.

Look for a cancellation period when you’re considering signing up, a period during which time if you change your mind you can receive a refund and cancel the policy with no penalty. A good company does not make money by tying people into policies they don’t want.

Finally, check with consumer institutes as to the companies reputation. Stay away from companies that appear deluged with complaints, they are unlikely to serve you any better than they served their previous customers. Talk to friends and family, and get an idea of the experiences they have had. Much can be learned from word of mouth information.

Above all, take your time. Choosing a health insurance provider is an important decision, and not one you should feel rushed about.

My Top 15 Non-Traditional, Muscle Building, Fat Scorching Workouts

Filed under: Online Templates Resources — admin at 7:27 am on Saturday, April 26, 2008

If you have been bored by doing the same old weight training and
cardio routines, why not spice up your training by adding some
of these alternative training styles. They will not only make
things more interesting, but also be sure to spark some new
results in your body!

Here are some of my favorite non-traditional training techniques:

1. Staircase Workouts - You can go to a football field and do
stadium stairs, any building that has stairs like a hotel (most
people take the elevator, so you will not even have many people
looking at you while you’re working out), or even the stairs in
your own home. For an awesome full body workout, try mixing
stairs sprints with an upper body exercise like pushups or
pull-ups. If done with a high enough intensity, stairs workouts
help to create changes throughout your entire body due to the
muscle building and fat burning hormonal response and metabolism
increase that you get through working the biggest muscle groups
in your entire body. You can find out more info on stairs
exercises workouts and how to make them more effective at my
‘fitness products’ page at truthaboutabs.com with the link below.

2. Wind Sprints and Hill Sprints - Find any open field in a park
or athletic field and try 50, 75, and 100-yard all-out wind
sprints. After each sprint, rest long enough to catch your
breath before the next one (approx. 30-90 sec). Try workouts of
anywhere from 6 to 20 wind sprints for a great “cutting”
workout. Also, if you have a hill nearby, hill sprints are also
great workouts. Sprint up the hill as fast as you can and walk
down for your rest interval. Repeat until you’re whooped (a
20-30 minute hill workout is plenty). These sprint workouts are
so amazingly effective at changing your entire body for the same
reason as stairs exercises…by powerfully working the biggest
muscle groups in your entire body, you greatly stimulate your
metabolism while simultaneously increasing your fat burning and
muscle building hormones.

Just look at any world class 100-meter sprinters and notice how
ripped-to-shreds those guys are. Now compare that to the
emaciated weakling physiques of many marathoners, and you’ll see
that sprinting is where the action is at for a healthy, ripped,
powerful body! Now I don’t want to upset all of you distance
runners out there. Hey, if distance running is something you
enjoy, then go right ahead. But don’t say you’re doing it for
the health benefits, because I might just have to disagree. You
can read my full story on why I believe variable intensity
training is far superior to steady-state endurance training in
one of my other articles at
http://truthaboutabs.com/cardio-article.html

3. Kettlebell Training - Kettlebell training has been one of the
best training methods that I’ve ever had the good fortune of
getting into, and has taken my physical capabilities to a whole
new level. Kettlebells are an alternative type of free-weight
training instead of barbells and dumbbells. Their unique
construction and weight distribution (basically a cannonball
with a handle) allows for a whole different realm of exercises
that’s available compared to dumbbells and barbells. Kettlebells
have been typically used for training hard-core athletes,
military units, martial arts competitors, and other tough
individuals, but there is no reason that anybody looking to get
stronger, bigger, or more cut can’t learn the exercises and
benefit from them.

It’s been a little over a year now since I’ve incorporated
kettlebell training into my routines, and I’ll admit that I’m
hooked for life! Kettlebells are definitely not cheap, but they
are well worth the money. Just one or two kettlebells and you’ve
literally got yourself an entire home gym that you can use for
the rest of your life…worth every penny in my book! If you
want to give these body-hardening kettlebells a try, you can
find more info at my ‘fitness products’ page at
truthaboutabs.com at the link below.

4. Bodyweight Workouts - For a change of pace, try adding to
your routine one or two workouts a week at home with just
bodyweight based exercises. These can be great because you can
get a high intensity workout done in only 15-30 minutes without
having to go to the gym on days that you might not have time for
a trip to the gym. Try alternating bodyweight squats, pushups
variations, lunges, and floor abs exercises continuously for
15-30 minutes. Try to take very short rest periods or none at
all to really amp up the intensity since this will be a brief
workout. If you’re more advanced, you can even incorporate more
challenging exercises like handstand pushups, one-arm pushups,
and one-legged squats into your bodyweight training routines.

5. Ring Training - This type of training basically uses portable
gymnastic rings that you can take anywhere with you. You throw
the straps up over any high bar like a pullup bar, the top of a
power rack, or even over a football field goal crossbar. Then
you can quickly adjust the rings to do exercises like ring dips,
ring pushups, ring pull-ups, hanging leg raises, horizontal body
rows, L-sits, and more. Dips and pushups on the rings are my
favorites and the rings really make them a hell of a lot more
difficult, while also incorporating your stabilizer muscles to a
much greater degree. The rings allow your joints to move in a
more natural pattern and can help you prevent or even recover
from shoulder injuries. Personally, when I try dips on a normal
dip stand, it hurts my shoulders. However, dips on the training
rings feel perfect, and also give me a much better muscle pump.
The training rings are one of the best training devices I’ve
ever bought. Give them a try…I think you’ll like them if
you’re up for a challenge and really want to take your upper
body development to a new level. I found my training rings at
ringtraining.com.

6. Swimming - A great full body workout that stresses the
muscles and joints in a much different way than most resistance
training. Incorporating swimming workouts once or twice a week
into your normal training routings can really enhance your
physique. I recommend trying a “sprint” style swimming workout,
which will help more for building muscle compared with endurance
long distance swimming. For sprint style, swim as hard as you
can to the other side of a 25-meter or 50-meter pool (or sprint
swim similar distances in a lake or the ocean if you like to
swim outdoors). Rest enough to catch your breath between sprint
swims (about 20-40 seconds). Try to keep the rest intervals
fairly short with swim sprints. You can also mix different
strokes (crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, backstroke, butterfly)
on each swim sprint. I’ve found that sprint swimming gives me a
great muscle pump (especially in the upper body), without any
soreness the next day as is typical with weight training. This
is because swimming has no eccentric movement (the negative
portion of a lift), which is what causes muscle soreness. Keep
in mind that even though swimming works your muscles well, and
is a nice alternative workout to mix in once or twice a week, it
does not strengthen your bones. You still need to do regular
weight training to do that.

7. Sandbag Training - This form of training is a nice variation
to mix in with your strength training. It works your body with
an unstable object, which makes muscles that might normally be
neglected get in on the action to perform the movements. I’ve
been mixing some sandbag training into my routines for over a
year now, and I’ve found it is a very intense method of training
that works your muscles in a different way and gets you huffing
and puffing like crazy. You can make your own sandbags to train
with by filling various sized duffle bags with sand, or you can
use those construction type sandbags that come in several
shapes. Sandbag exercises can be done as squats, cleans,
presses, lunges, shouldering, throws or heaves, carrying up
hills, etc. Make no mistake, training intensely with sandbags
will get you ripped in no time flat! If you’re interested in
this type of training, you can find more info at my ‘fitness
products’ page at truthaboutabs.com at the link below.

8. Mountain Biking - As you may have figured by now, I’m not a
proponent of steady pace endurance exercise, but rather, highly
variable intensity exercise that works with bursts of exertion
followed by recovery intervals. Well, mountain biking fits this
bill perfectly. You get the leg pumping exertion during the
uphill climbs, while also getting the adrenaline rush of the
downhill acting as your recovery intervals. Mix it all together
and you get a super-fun, high-intensity, leg burning workout
that will melt fat off of your entire body and build awesome
legs at the same time. The climbs can be tough and will
challenge you both physically and mentally as you pump away
trying to make it up steep hills without having to resort to
getting off of the bike. Then after you make it up the
challenging climbs, you get rewarded with the adrenaline rush of
flying down steep hills while jumping off of boulders and logs
and trying not to stumble or fall off the bike. It’s such an
addicting thrill…I love it!

9. Indoor (or outdoor) Rock Climbing - This is yet another fun
way to get in a great workout that will also challenge you both
physically and mentally. Indoor rock climbing gyms will be more
accessible than outdoor rock climbing to most people. Rock
climbing is a great workout for your legs, arms, shoulders, and
your entire back. It also really works your grip strength and
forearms like crazy. Whenever I go indoor rock climbing (which
is only on occasion), my forearms are sore for about 2-3 days
afterwards. Give it a try if you’ve never done it…it may be
just what you’re looking for to spice up your fitness routine.

10. Stick Wrestling - This is a killer full body workout and can
also be a great competition between you and your friends. There
are actually sticks designed specifically for stick wresting,
but you can even just use a strong broomstick cut down to about
30-36 inches long and taped up with some athletic tape to
prevent splinters. For your stick wrestling workout, stand on a
soft mat or carpeted area (or grass if outdoors), match up with
a friend or foe. You’ll both grab the same stick toward the ends
with your hands on the outsides of your partner’s hands, on the
inside, or staggered. Then you simply push, pull, jerk, and
thrash your opponent around trying to knock them off balance
until they either fall or lose their grip of the stick…and you
win that round! Be careful not to get the stick up high and
knock each other in the face. Use common sense. You can do this
in 1-2 minute rounds or just keep going until someone gives up.
Be creative and keep going until you’ve gotten a killer workout.
Your forearms and legs will be screaming!

11. Strongman Training - This type of training is a little more
hard-core, but it’s a blast for those who are into trying
something different. The premise is based on the types of
exercises competitors perform in the “world’s strongest man”
competitions. If you have a yard, you can even set up some of
these exercises in your yard and do some outdoor workouts to
have a little fun. You can get one of those giant tractor tires
and do tire flips (which is basically a deadlift followed by a
push-press). You can also try your hand at log lifts, boulder
lifts and carries, keg lifts and tosses, weighted sled
dragging…anything that involves pulling, pushing, lifting, or
heaving any types of odd objects. You don’t need to be a monster
to enjoy this type of training…just handle whatever size
objects are challenging for your individual strength. Strongman
training works your entire body in a very intense fashion and
could easily spark some new results. If you’re interested in
finding out more ideas for strongman training, check out my
‘fitness products’ page at truthaboutabs.com at the link below.

12. Rope Climbing - If you have access to a rope, either at a
gym or somewhere outdoors, rope climbing builds a powerful and
ripped upper body like no other exercise. A great way to
incorporate rope climbing into intense workouts is to alternate
climbs with lower body exercises like squats or lunges. Keep
alternating the upper body rope climbs with the lower body
exercises in between and you’ll get one hell of a full body
workout.

13. Bag Boxing - You can use a heavy bag, a speed bag, or even
one of those rebound bags to get a great workout. Among the
three, the heavy bag is the best all around full body workout,
while the speed bag will test your rhythm and timing and give
you a great upper body workout. If available at your gym or if
you have a bag at home, try mixing these in as a good warm-up or
as an intense finish to your strength routine.

14. Rope Skipping - You can’t beat rope jumping as a great full
body exercise. I like to use it as a warm-up for my weight
training workouts. I prefer to use the really cheap “speed”
ropes with a plastic rope instead of a fabric rope. Once you get
good, you can jump rope much faster with the plastic ropes than
the fabric ones, which will allow you to get a more intense
workout. And don’t mess with the weighted handle ropes…they’ll
just slow you down. Your goal is speed when rope skipping. Try
mixing together two legged jumps, one-legged jumps, arm
crossovers, double jumps (rope passes under feet twice for each
jump) to keep things interesting and increase the intensity.
Also, try alternating 15-20 second high intensity bursts where
you jump as fast as you possibly can, followed by 15-20 second
recovery intervals where you jump slowly to get ready for your
next burst.

15. Jumping exercises - squat jumps, box jumps, lunge jumps, and
broad jumps are some of the best ways to incorporate explosive
jumping exercises into your routines. The explosive and powerful
nature of jumping exercises works your leg muscles in an
entirely different way than most normal slow grinding strength
training moves. I’ve even seen a university study cited once
that found squat jumps to elicit the greatest testosterone
response of all exercises studied. That means more muscle and
less fat on your entire body, not just your legs.

I hope you’ve enjoyed all of these ideas for ways to really
shake up your workouts and make them fun again. I know some of
them may seem a little “out there”, but open your mind to the
possibilities and you’ll never be bored again…and your body
will respond with new found results!

Know Your Bodybuilding Supplement - L-Tyrosine

Filed under: Nutrition Hub — admin at 12:13 am on Saturday, April 26, 2008

L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that plays a role in the creation of protein. The body can make it from the amino acid phenylalanine but nutritional sources include animal meats, wheat, oatmeal and seafood.

It performs a multitude of important roles in the body including the alleviation of depression, enhancement of thyroid efficiency, strengthening of the immune system, prevention of neurological degeneration and protection of the skin.

Bodybuilders find it useful for several reasons:

1. It offsets the stress and fatigue associated with intensive training.

2. It helps in the retention of muscular protein.

3. It heightens mental alertness thus helping to offset mental fatigue.

With any amino acid supplement overdosing can lead to weakness and nausea so care should be taken in applying small doses and increasing them gradually until an optimum level is reached. Bear in mind that many protein powders and other supplements are fortified with amino acids so check the labels carefully. The manufacturer’s instructions should be followed in all instances.

Rick Mitchell has written numerous articles aimed at helping athletes, from beginners to advanced, understand how to build muscle and increase strength. He has also developed several supporting web resources including Bodybuilding Supplement Review

Consulting Contracts with National Service Organizations - Good Idea?

Filed under: Sales — admin at 12:05 am on Saturday, April 26, 2008

Don’t do it. Why not? You’ll spend a lot of money and a lot of time getting certified and learning all the latest platforms and technologies. But the reality is that hardware repair is a commodity - a low margin business. And it’s becoming more and more of a commodity service every year as the components become more disposable and more replaceable than repairable. In this article, you’ll learn why consulting contracts with national service organizations are not the best choice.

Computers Are Now Replaceable

Let’s take a $600 consumer-grade PC for example. Who’s going to spend money on an out-of-warranty repair on a $600 PC? Who’s going to spend money on an out of warranty repair on a $400 laser printer? How much money are small businesses willing to spend on this kind of repair?

Low Labor Allowances for Consulting Contracts

Since national service organizations are going to primarily be dealing with warranty repairs on relatively inexpensive hardware, how much labor allowance do you think they’re really going to give up on a $1,200 notebook? Many big hardware vendors are so cash strapped that they’re always on the verge of going out of business constantly. Dell, HP, and IBM are pretty much the only major hardware players that are still in reasonably good financial shape (even if you consider IBM in the hardware business anymore).

The Profit Margin on Repairs in Consulting Contracts

So, what are you going to make on a repair? Fifty dollars? A hundred dollars? $150 or $200 at the absolute most? You’re going to do a lot better by finding small businesses in your area that need high-level professional services on a regular basis.

Consulting Contracts with National Service Providers Aren’t Profitable

Acting as a subcontractor for a national service provider is a really hard way to run a consulting business. Do you want to be in eight different offices every single day, or do you want to be in one or two? Do you want to be billing out at $100 or $150 an hour for high-end network support services and network integration services? Or do you want to be told that you’re going to be allowed a $65 labor allowance to replace a system board, no matter how long it takes you?

The Bottom Line about Consulting Contracts

Repairing and troubleshooting hardware is low-end commodity work. It’s work that can be done by people that are billing out at $20 or $30 an hour. It’s not the high-end consulting you could be doing with consulting contracts. Don’t ever confuse the two.

Weird Sells: Get Noticed on the Internet

Filed under: Web Of Marketing — admin at 10:34 pm on Friday, April 25, 2008

What is weird?, well in the 21st century it’s getting more and more difficult to define what is weird and what isn’t . According to the dictionary one definition is “Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange”. Surely that isn’t enough any more? A quick look at eBay and you will find hundreds of items that would comply with that definition. Toast with faces on it, Glass jars containing Ghosts and numerous examples of weird and wacky objects, (well weird and wacky according to the people who have submitted them.) The sheer number of them should preclude them from being classed as Weird. Mainstream Newspapers now have pages of weird news and no shortage of people willing to appear on them. The nightly news no longer finishes with heart warming local story it finishes with some weird local happening Weird is big news.

It seems that weird and bizarre are now mainstream and are considered marketing tools or a gateway to 15 minutes of fame. In earlier centuries the highlight of the year was the visit of a circus or a fair and their cast of weird and wonderful characters and creatures. Queues would form outside the tents as people waited to see the latest freaks and bizarre sights. The Internet is the modern equivalent of the Freak Show and with a bit of planning and preparation you can use this desire for the weird and wacky to promote your site or your company.

Viral marketing is the key to your success, Find something that people will find funny and amusing and want to show their friends and you are halfway there. Some recent examples are the plumbers van that had a naked body painted on door so that it looked like a naked person was driving. The photograph traveled from inbox to inbox each time the name of the company was seen along with the URL of their site, it was picked up by local newspapers and local TV and the work flooded in (sorry for the pun!).

It doesn’t take a big budget just a big imagination, Find something weird, photograph it watermark the photograph and place it on your site take some anti leeching precautions to stop people copying it and send the link out, visit a few forums and place the link in your signature, pass the photo to some of the many sites specializing in weird soon you will have a stream of traffic to your site.

There is no difference from the Internet to the freak shows of the 19th and 20th Centuries except that this time the freaks are on the outside of the tent!

A Helpful Bargain Hunters Guide on LCD Television’s

Filed under: Shopping Hub — admin at 5:40 am on Friday, April 25, 2008

More or less a decade ago the proposal of a wall-mounted TV may possibly have seemed like something from a science fiction film. It was out of the grasp of the majority of avid buyers, with outstandingly high fees that requested taking out a second mortgage to acquire these very sleek tellies. Still, over a period these amazing TV sets reached the point of attainability. Nevertheless, still not something you could just go out and buy, it has of late all of a sudden become much more of a possibility. Marked-up prices for these flat panel HDTV sets are now declining more rapidly than new home prices, & have made the fantasy a reality.

Presently there are two opposite flat-panel products; plasma & LCD. Despite the fact that each product offers a brilliant picture and these sets do look comparable from the front, the equipment on the inside is very much dissimilar. And even though LCD televisions have been limited to 37″s & below, TV sets with the liquid crystal display technology are at this time in sizes as huge as plasma.

Though, in spite of that, numerous shoppers think plasma to provide numerous major advantages over LCD TV’s. The biggest advantages is that plasma television sets typically include deeper black levels-denoting that the blacks are in fact black and not really just a dark type of gray. This in turn means that the colours are much more vivid and convincing. The most current models from Toshiba & Panasonic have really taken the black levels to superior depths, and consequently have presented the best pictures we’ve seen to date.

Regardless of the gossip that plasma TV sets “needs to be recharged” after six-thousand hours, nothing could be further from the reality. Today’s flat panel plasma TVs should often operate for sixty-thousand hours or more, providing you years of magnificent TV viewing. Although there has been a worry over issues such as burn-in (appropriately so, as this could ruin that expensive television), the recent models feature technology to tackle picture retention, offering pixel alter modes that slowly move the whole display, and more essentially, take-away any ghosting should static pictures essentially “stick” the image. This consists of a white wash mode on top of an opposite mode to remove any burn-in. Numerous Plasma TVs can be found on offer online at Digital Direct

Customer Service and Marketing that Works

Filed under: The Commerce Trail — admin at 3:22 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Go into many businesses today and try and get service, its sometimes impossible! The customer service officer is on the phone talking about personal issues, there is not enough staff, and they are disinterested and distracted.

The old days of customer service is where you the customer were viewed as valuable and important and you received service from a person and not a machine.

With an emphasis on shareholder wealth and increased profits the shift has been slowly eroding the service ethos of many businesses. This has not gone unnoticed!

Many employees in these businesses become disenchanted with the ‘ivory tower’ mentality of management as they issue edicts from afar without employee consultation and finding out what really happens at the shop front.

Off course (sic) looking at the glossy brochures you would see that the business is a committed believer in service excellence but the fact remains it’s not forthcoming.

By way of example take the banks that are closing down branches and steadily increasing fees for services that you were once told were free.

For the ordinary consumer we cop it on the chin, complain to ourselves and our neighbors or put up with it and say nothing.

This mediocrity in service mentality thrives because we are silent and the banks and other businesses know this. It a bit like politicians who leak policy to the media, weather the storm and then know the general populace will get used to it. The malaise of apathy ensures that they win!

But you can respond and you should.

People power has enormous effect if it is sustained and enough people complain - or compliment.

What can you do!

1. When someone delivers a shoddy product or service approach the business politely and firmly and ask that the issue be addressed.

2. Don’t take NO for an answer! Sometimes it takes persistence to get heard or in other words the ’squeaky wheel gets the oil’.

3. Reward good service. If your bank manager or service clerk gives good services compliment them. This is very important.

4. If you are given excellent service write a letter to their manager and say ‘thank you’

5. If you own a business reward good customer service. Rewards do not have to be expensive.

6. Lead by example if you are a manager.

Take the following example of excellence in service;

An Audiometrist who sold hearing aids to 8 clients a day used to ring 2 of their clients the next day to see how the new hearing aids were working. This business grew a solid reputation for service and new potential customers would often ring up and ask to see this Audiometrist by name.

By taking the time to ensure that their customers were looked after the business was able to outsell other hearing aid suppliers because people were treated with respect. This subsequently cut down the advertising and marketing costs of the business ensuring that the business had a steady stream of referrals and business and could focus on customer service. It had the effect that because of trust people would purchase more expensive hearing aids because they trusted the business and its service ethos.

Business isn’t difficult if you know your market and take the time to care for people!

Different types of Ringtones

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 1:32 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Ringtones are the sound to convey you when you receive an
incoming call or message. They allow you to express yourself and
highlight your uniqueness and style. If you have a distictive
ringtone, you know when it is your mobile phone ringing
and not somebody else’s. Consumers are nowadays very much
attracted to the latest ringtones as they find them very
appealing. They always want to keep up with the times by using
distinctive ringtones to distinguish callers, to identify
callers without looking at your mobile phone.

Mobile phone ringtones primarily come in three different
types; monophonic ringtones, polyphonic ringtones and true tones. Monophonic
ringtones
are simple tones most commonly compatible with
today’s phones. They are made up of a series of sequential beeps
at different frequencies.

Polyphonic ringtones have the ability to produce 16
separate sounds at once creating a harmonic melody. All the
latest models support polyphonic ringtones. Almost all the
newer phones from manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung, Siemens,
Sony-Ericsson, LG, Sanyo, Panasonic now have ringtones
capabilities
.

True tones or MP3 ringtones, the newest option in the ringtone
industry, have original voices and original instruments. They
not only feature current hits but music of the past and top hits
of tomorrow as well. Latest mobile phones are now beginning to
provide MP3 ringtones for incoming calls. So you can hear
original artist songs whenever you get a call.

The demand for ringtones is immense and ever growing..An
interesting fact about ringtones is that the majority of the mobile phone ringtone active users are young people. The
low prices and easy access of ringtones through the internet has
made ringtone industry a big success. Before downloading
ringtones from the website, be sure first that are compatible
with your specific phone model
and, second that they can be
delivered over your phone company’s network. If you’d rather be
more creative, you can use ringtone composer and ringtone
converter to compose your own ringtone . Being with the times,
the ringtone industry has become as large as the mobile phone
industry and apart from that they are fun and ever changing.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark

Filed under: Pet Care — admin at 1:03 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2008

One of the most common questions dog owners are forced to address is how to train a dog not to bark.

Dogs love to bark. It’s a perfectly natural thing for your dog to do, just as it’s normal for us humans to speak.

It’s when our dogs bark excessively that it becomes a problem for all concerned - including our neighbours.

Considering this, our goal isn’t to to stop our dogs from barking, but rather how to control the excessive barking.

There are of course situations when we want our dogs to bark (and I guess there are also times when I like my chatty aunty to speak!;)

Training our dogs to stop or at least reduce their barking habit can be a very difficult task.

The first step in modifying this problem is to determine the reason why your dog is barking in the first place. Once you’ve identified the cause or trigger, you can then plan your
training solution.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

  • To express their needs (being bossy).

  • Some dogs are bred to bark (some terriers and hounds).

  • They are staking out their territory.

  • To alert other members of their pack (that’s you and your family) of impending danger.

  • When playing, just through sheer excitement.

  • Barking at other animals. Depending on where you are in the world, it could be squirrels
    or any other small animal.

  • If they are isolated.

  • Some dogs bark excessively when separated from their pack (you and your family).

  • If they are trapped behind some type of barrier like a fence or window.

  • Just for fun!

  • To express dominance (puppies normally test you out at some stage with a display of dominance barking).

  • They bark because their owners have inadvertently rewarded excessive barking in the past (this is crucial to understand).

  • Through boredom or a lack of physical and mental stimulation.

  • May feel stressed or uncomfortable for some reason. Things like feeling threatened or if they don’t have an appropriate place to sleep can cause excessive barking problems.

  • Dogs that haven’t been properly socialized often become nuisance barkers.

  • May be looking for a response or some attention from their pack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even though it may appear to you that your dog is barking at nothing, this is not necessarily the case. This is due to the fact that your dog
has a much more acute sense of hearing, smell and sight than us humans. Your dogs excessive barking is probably being triggered by something.

How To Stop Your Dog From Barking

Ok, now we’ve sorted out the reason for your dogs barking problem, we can put some training techniques in place to control it.

The most important piece of advice to remember when trying to modify any dog behavioral problem, is to clearly communicate to your dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

One of the biggest mistakes us dog owners make is to inadvertently reward our dogs excessive barking. We actually encourage and reinforce the barking problem when we commit these three dog training sins:

  1. Yell and scream at the dog - this just gives them the attention they were crying out for.

  2. Let them inside. If your dog is barking his head off outside, then you let him in, this just rewards the barking.

  3. If your dog is barking and you react by giving him a comforting cuddle or a treat of some sort, you are definitely encouraging your dog to bark again. By doing this you are communicating to your dog that you are happy with him. You should be making it clear that his excessive barking is inappropriate.

Right, lets get stuck into some proven techniques to stop your dog from barking. I’ve listed the most common reasons why your dog may be barking, and some suggested solutions you can try.

Dog Goes Crazy Every Time The Phone Rings

This is a very common and annoying time for dogs to bark excessively. Try these training techniques:

  • Never yell at your dog.

  • Get your dog used to the phone ringing, don’t make it such a big deal. Ring your home number from your cell phone or get a friend to keep calling you. When the phone rings just sit there, don’t say or do a thing. Repeat this process over a few days, your dog will probably continue to bark for a while but will give up before long.

  • If you give your dog basic obedience training, behavioral problems such as excessive barking are easily controlled. Your dog looks up to you as their pack leader and is eager to please you in any situation. Teaching the Quiet! or Stop! obedience training command will soon correct nuisance barking problems.

  • You may have some success by changing the tone and volume of your ring tone.

Dog Barks When You Are Not Home

I’m not going to pretend this type of barking will be easy for you to control, because in reality it is often a difficult and lengthy process.

Always remember that dogs are social creatures, when they are separated from their pack (you) they can become stressed and frustrated. This type of excessive barking is often caused by separation anxiety.

  • Firstly I’d say just use your common sense and get these dog ownership basics right. Keep your dog well exercised (physical and mental) and provide fresh water, chewing toys and a nice comfortable place to sleep. You can also try to block your dogs view of the street or other distractions. Basically, make sure your dog is happy.

  • If you know your dog has been barking while you have been away, you must ignore him for a while when you return home. I understand this is difficult for lots of owners, but otherwise your dog believes that his barking is the reason you came back home to him. Just go about your business for a little while when you get home, ignoring your dog. When your dog has settled down, you then initiate contact with him.

  • This next method takes time and patience, but can be a very effective way to stop your dog from barking. It’s based on that important rule applicable to all training situations.
Praise or reward when your dog does something good, create a negative association when he does something bad. Leave the house as you normally would, but just hide somewhere nearby. When your dog starts to bark spray him with water or throw a tin can full of coins or rocks in his direction (this is the negative association). Try to keep out of your dogs sight while doing this if possible. Go and hide again, if he is quiet for a while, go in and reward his good behavior with some praise and maybe a treat. This process may need to be repeated over and over until you have broken the excessive barking habit.

  • The above techniques have proven to be successful with my own dogs, but if they don’t work for you, maybe you could try a Citronella Collar. Again this method uses the power of negative association. Every time your dog barks, a fine mist of citronella is sprayed into the air. Most dogs hate the smell, and soon realise if they don’t bark, the smell isn’t there to bother them. If you have more than one dog this method is not a suitable solution.

Dog Barks For Attention Or To Demand Something

This is one excessive barking problem that can be corrected very quickly.

  • If you establish yourself as the pack leader or alpha dog in your owner-dog relationship, this type of barking problem won’t occur. You’ll also form a strong bond with your dog based on trust and respect.

  • Another effective method you can try to stop this attention barking is simply ignoring your dog. Your dog will probably become frustrated and bark alot initially, but once he realizes that it is not getting him anywhere, he will stop. This training method can be hard on the ears for a while!

Dog Barks At Passers By

Workers like the Postman and Delivery Driver’s are constantly being barked at throughout their day.

Your dog perceives these type of people as intruders or a threat to their territory. The dog then barks and every time he barks he is rewarded, as the intruder goes away. Your dog is then very pleased that he has averted this threat, which leads him to do it again and again. His behavior is reinforced and therefore this can be a difficult problem to turn around.

  • If possible, you could try to block your dogs vision or access to the area where these people pass by.

  • Dog obedience training is the best solution to this type of excessive barking. Once you have your dog properly obedience trained, you will be able to communicate to him that this is unacceptable behavior.

  • If your dog consistently barks at a particular person, you may need this person to help modify your dogs behavior. Just say your dog gets really agitated each time the postman
arrives. Have a chat to your postman and give him some of your dogs very favorite treats. Each time he delivers to your house, he can also deliver a tasty treat to your dog. In your dogs mind the postman goes from being a threat, to a welcome guest.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark

In extreme cases of excessive barking, where all else has failed, some people advocate debarking surgery. I’ve never needed to go down this path with any of my dogs, and don’t think I ever would. But if you have come to the end of the line and think you have run out of options, you could discuss debarking surgery with your Veterinarian.

Good luck in trying to control your dog’s excessive barking. If you consistently apply the above training techniques and add a little patience, you should have your dog under control before long.

Promotional Calendars and Diaries Essential Tips

Filed under: Best Brands, Business Affairs, Web Of Marketing — admin at 11:05 am on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Here we introduce 10 top tips on selecting corporate calendars and diaries.

1. First order as early in the year as possible, that way you get the best choice as popular titles will sell out fast.

2. If a bespoke or branded calendar is required, it needs to be designed very early in the year to avoid disappointments.

3. When choosing a promotional calendar, please do think about how your customers’ offices look like. For example is there room for a wall calendar? Or maybe a desk top calendar is better where there is lack of space.

4. When choosing a promotional or branded calendar format, please consider if the writing space available or not? And also, will your customers prefer one with writing space or not?

5. When choosing a diary, think about whether a desk or pocket type is best for your target market. Are they office bound where a desk diary would be best, or will they move, in which case a pocket diary would be more suitable a proposition?

6. When you have decided on which pocket or desk calendar best meets your requirements and then consider the best page layout and format. The options can be ‘week to view’ or ‘page a day’. Think about what will you clients prefer?

7. For branding of personalised or custom promotional calendars and diaries, please always send the best quality artwork possible, the higher the quality of artwork used, the better the result will be in the short to long run.

8. Ordering early also ensures you get delivery when you would like it, very important if you prefer your sales staff to deliver the promotional items by hand or if you need to send these promotional items and products abroad.

9. Remember everyone uses a calendar or a diary every day so they are one of the best forms of year-round promotion to add to your campaign.

10. A good way to find and source promotional calendars from suppliers in the UK is to look online such as at www.promotional-merchandise.org.uk where you can find anything from calendars and diaries to other promotional items, such as keyrings, carrier bags and corporate gifts.
