10 Programming Tips

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 8:49 pm on Friday, September 5, 2008

(1) Avoid using the same variable again and again for different purposes.

This happens with us that we think that more and more memory will be wasted if we declare seperate variable for each purpose. But, if any debugging is about to be done and program is quite a typical. Then, debugger will get confused and Dry-Run will also not work in such a scenario. So, if your program is small then, you can use the same variable. But, if it is complex, then do not use the same cheap practive.

(2) Use capital letter to variable name for global variables.

You should use capital letters because, there should be distinguishable difference between a local variable and global variable. There should not be any confusion while dry run or debugging.

(3) All the variables should be declared at one place.

This helps the programmer to analyze whether some variable is yet declared or not. If we declare them at different locations, then, a proper manner can not be acheived in your programming. The variables should normally defined just below the function declaration.

(4) There should be proper indenting in whole program.

Indenting helps you understand the program and the logic behind the statements well. This is cheap practice to write the functions, iterations and conditional statements without indenting. It looks like a junk also. There should be a proper demarkation in your mind and the same concept should be followed in all the portions of your program.

(5) Commenting.

Commenting is very much important. Although, there is no relation of them from your logic and programming. But, once you debug your program or new amendments are done, it becomes tedious to understand the logic behind that coding section. That is why, commenting is very neccesary in programming.

(6) Do not use labels.

In some programming languages like BASIC, there is scope of providing labels. Experts say that using such labels produces extra burden in the operating system. So, you should avoid them.

(7) Do not declare unused functions or variables.

This practice is also prohibited. You should not declare such a variable which is not getting used anyewhere. You should check it out when you are going through dry-run also.

(8) Coupling should be avoided cohesion should be increased.

Coupling comes to picture when the output of a function is input to other. This produces a sort of ripple effect and debugging becomes a problem and error-prone programming is found in such state.

(9) Always write the program or check the logic then, come to type.

This is a general practice that people directly sit on system and try to build logic and all the necessary corrections are done. But, such anactivity may produce problems like unused variable (regular declaration and descarding) , unused functions (declare and forget to call or just checking), moving in the wrong direction of logic. So, you should decide things before you come to portray them.

(10) Do not learn programs, try to develop your own logic.

Each person has logic but, there should be flow in that logic. If flow is absent then your ideas can not reach the destination. So, instead of learning an old algorithm, try to your own program based on your logic.

Does Voice Over IP Telephony Spell the End for Traditional Telephones?

Filed under: Internet Telecommunication Resources — admin at 7:08 am on Thursday, September 4, 2008

Just What is Voice Over IP Telephony?

Voice over Internet Telephony is technology that means you can hold telephone calls over the Internet or an IP network. It eliminates the need for having separate lines for your Internet connection and dedicated voice transfer lines. There are many advantages to VoIP but because it is still an advancing technology you need to shop around to find the best deal. No cumbersome circuit switching is required and there is no depletion in the bandwidth associated with normal dual line systems. VoIP protocol means that voice data is only sent over the network when it needs to be, freeing up that bandwidth when you aren’t making ‘calls’.

What are the Advantages of VoIP.

Voice over Internet Telephony isn’t widely used in office networks, let alone in the home, however if you make international phone calls then you are probably being routed through IP infrastructure because of the lower costs of calls. What this does mean, though, is that the infrastructure is quite obviously already in place and anyone who chooses can do so easily. This means that you can ‘call’ friends, family or associates using your own VoIP without the need for them to have the same technology installed.

The costs are phone calls that are reduced dramatically by using VoIP and once the infrastructure is in place there are usually little or no additional infrastructure charges required making it a cost effective and affordable telephony solution.

Because VoIP is a new technology you get the usual advantages of employing a new technology; increased technological advances and new technologies are employed meaning you get a state of the art system. Telecommunications providers have been regularly using IP networks to transfer voice data and so most of the teething problems have been thoroughly investigated and ironed out and all the advancements made have been integrated into a system you can have installed in your home, office or business.

You don’t necessarily have to transmit your calls over the Internet, and for more secure calls you can use private IP networks. For this reason many large businesses already have IP systems in place making inter-business calls much cheaper.

Electronic numbering makes it possible to dial traditional E 164 phone numbers connected entirely by your Internet connection. This means that you won’t face any call charges whatsoever, and all you will have to pay will be the cost of your Internet connection.

Is VoIP available for me to use now?

Companies like Vonage, VoicePulse and Packet8 are already offering flat monthly fees for their VoIP services meaning you can call anywhere in the country (sometimes even to other selected countries around the world) and only ever pay one flat monthly fee.

Vonage offer a service for $24.99 a month that allows you to call anywhere in the US or Canada. They also offer similar plans for small businesses.

Are there any disadvantages to VoIP?

VoIP, as a technology, is still in it’s infancy and new developments are being found every day. However, there are limitations to the service and the technology which need to be addresses before it can become a complete replacement for your standard phone line.

Because the Internet knows no geographic boundaries it means that, for example, calling the emergency services would not necessarily put you through to your local emergency dispatch centre.

In addition, you can’t send or receive faxes and you can’t route traditional modems, alarm systems or satellite systems through your VoIP connection, because they require access to a voice grade phone line. For the moment VoIP is a compliment to your traditional phone line, rather than a replacement, until these problems can be ironed out.

Summary

The advent of the Internet and improved telephone technology has seen the introduction of VoIP. It means you can make phone calls through your broadband connection; this in turn means that for a set monthly fee you can call anywhere in your country and selected international countries for as long as required and only pay one flat monthly fee.

The advantages of VoIP are still significant for homes and business users alike. Big businesses are already saving substantial money by installing IP networks and using VoIP protocol to transfer voice data. This essentially makes the calls themselves free, only having to pay for the Internet connection and the monthly VoIP fee.

VoIP looks like it’s here to stay. As the technology rolls out, it’s impact can only become greater.

Professional software icons for your standalone application

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 12:22 am on Thursday, September 4, 2008

User interfaces and accessibility are some of the most important aspect of an application. It can have a million features, it can do a thousand things once, but if it doesn’t look quite right then it will be a disaster. Take Linux for example. This open source (free) operating system has been around for quite a while, and it has been very appreciated for its stability and speed. However, in its earlier days it lacked a user interface, which made it very unattractive to the general public. While a few years back Linux was used only by system administrator and computer freaks, Microsoft’s Windows was all over the place, pumped up by its friendly user interface, even though it had a lot of bugs and was very unstable. Today’s things are quite different. People have learned from their mistakes and now, most operating systems, including Linux, use a graphical interface and are very user-friendly - things that in the past you could do by writing lines and lines of instructions, you can now do with a few clicks. This major improvement has brought in a whole new class of users, and the popularity of this operating system has increased considerably.

This is why the user interface matters a lot to the average computer user, and icons are one of the most important issues at matter. But why use icons and not plain text? Well, icons are visual mnemonics, that is, they are easier to remember. We see an icon a few times (or maybe once) and we “learn” it, and afterwords we associate the image with a certain action. The same thing happens with text, but it’s a lot faster to “read” an icon than it is to read a text, which makes icons a lot more recommended. Furthermore, adding icons to the important components of your application will sometimes save you from the frustration of answering the users who are not very familiar with the application and have trouble finding out how to use a certain feature. For example adding a question mark icon next inside the help button will make it easier for users to figure out where they can get help.

Today’s developers know that users will learn how to use a certain application a lot faster if its interface looks like the applications they are already familiar with. Take for example a Mac: can you see how all applications look pretty much the same? So it’s really easy to start using new applications, and you don’t have to read the manual to see what each button does, because most likely you’ll figure out that on your own. But there are two sides to this: if all applications look more or less the same, where is the uniqueness? Then again, if the application is totally unique, users might find it difficult to get acquainted with. So the best way to go is to use an interface that combines both these rules - not an “average” looking user interface, but also not a totally unique one. It’s easy to get stuck with this idea, but this is where icons come in.

Icons are the easiest way to differentiate your application, while still keeping a note of familiarity. Most developers have found it very efficient to replace the operating system’s stock icons with their own custom-made icons. How? Well, start with the little things. Try adding shadows to icons, or maybe apply different effects (emboss, blur, add a border, etc.) using a graphics editor. Another approach is to change the icon’s colors. Make them all blue, yellow, or some other color you might think it would look great with the rest of the interface. A toolbar with enhanced, yet similar buttons (for example replacing the New, Open, Save, Print, Cut, Copy, Paste icons) really improves the overall interface. After replacing the icons, it’s a lot easier to make the next step and start changing colors.

But what to do with these old-fashioned users that like to keep it simple? How about people with special needs, who might have problems reading small texts or seeing some colors. Also, there must be a way for all the people - and it’s really a mystery here - who like the same old icons and colors on all their applications. Fortunately, the answer is simple: different application skins! It’s a good idea to have a “standard” skin for the users who like to keep it simple, offering the basic features in a really easy to use manner, and then to create a few more enhanced skins for the people that like different interfaces - big fat buttons with shiny icons for the main applications features, or perhaps lots of toolbars with many buttons for advanced users. Again, the easiest way to creating new skins is changing the icons and colors. You don’t really have to change the layout of the application and move all the toolbars/buttons/windows around, for it might require sometimes too much work. But replacing icons is really easy. Voila! You have a new skin!

Today’s computer applications are focusing more and more on graphics, and especially icons, while text interfaces are becoming less popular. The modern applications’ interfaces use icons and text as well, but paying a special attention to icons. This way it’s a lot easier for users to learn how the application works, so therefore they will accomplish their tasks quickly. An intuitive interface and standard behaviors don’t require much explanation, and a well-designed application must not get into the user’s way, but must provide fast access to its most important features. This is the general rule which brought Microsoft millions and millions of dollars for it’s main product - the Windows operating system - so why shouldn’t we follow their example?

No Limit versus Limit in Texas Holdem

Filed under: Fun Infos, Gambling Hall, Life Of Games — admin at 12:48 pm on Wednesday, September 3, 2008

You can play Texas Holdem in two ways. There is No-limit or limit. What this means is that when you are betting on a hand in no-limit you can raise it as high as you can wish, even go all in. In limit, you are allowed to only raise it a certain amount.

Which is better to play for Texas Holdem poker? In tournament play, no-limit is often what is chosen as the rule. In doing this, they are giving the option of going all-in, meaning putting all your chips up for the bet. Some people prefer this to limit poker because of that option.

Limit Texas Holdem poker is the choice of those that don’t want the all-in option. At times when betting if all you have is the same or less than the raise, you will automatically go all in. Going all in automatically as that is, the only way during limit poker you will go all-in.

Whichever way you prefer, limit or no-limit Texas Holdem, either way can be fun and a learning experience. Both ways of playing these types of Texas Holdem, will produce a challenge of play for the poker player and a fun time learning something new if they haven’t done that before.

Writing - How to Edit the Formatting of Cross References in FrameMaker?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 3:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2008

FrameMaker has a very powerful cross referencing (linking) functionality. You can easily refer to another section or element in your book by a hyper-link that will be alive when you save your document as a PDF file.

Since I have explained the basics of creating a cross reference in another article, here I’ll focus on the different styles and formats in which you can insert such cross references.

Select Special > Cross Reference (or use the very useful Esc+S+C hotkey shortcut) to launch the Cross Reference dialog box.

Select a REFERENCE FORMAT from the drop-down box and then click the EDIT button to display the EDIT CROSS-REFERENCE FORMAT dialog box.

If you’d like to just edit an existing format, make your edits in the DEFINITION field. You can enter building blocks like “Emphasis” or “Page Number” easily from the BUILDING BLOCKS list.

When you are done, click CHANGE, and then click DONE.

However, if you’d like to create a totally new cross reference format, give it a new NAME and then click ADD. The new format will be added to the list and will appear in the REFERENCE FORMAT drop-down list every time you’d like to create a cross reference in the future.

To DELETE a format, select it from the list of formats and then click the DELETE button.

Microsoft Great Plains: Data Conversion & Migration Scenarios - Overview for Consultant

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 2:42 pm on Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains serves multiple industries in the US, plus it has strong presence in Latin America, U.K., Australia, Canada, Middle East, South Africa. Great Plains is natural solution for growing company, when small business accounting application, such as QuickBooks, M.Y.O.B, Peachtree, Quicken or others should be replaced with ERP, better positioned to serve mid-size business. With the switch to Microsoft Great Plains you need to decide on data migration and conversion. Let us give you highlights on your options:

• Beginning Balances approach. This is the simplest way. What you do is - enter beginning balances in Great Plains General Ledger (GL) and begin using your new system. When you need to enter invoice for existing customer - you create customer record in Great Plains and go ahead with Invoice in Accounts Receivables or Sales Order Processing (SOP). The same symmetric procedure is for vendor invoices in Purchase Order Processing (POP)

• Master Records migration. If you have large number of customers and vendors, plus multiple addresses for customers, numerous inventory items, sophisticated chart of accounts with several thousand accounts in GL - you need to migrate these master records from your old accounting to Great Plains. The best way is - purchase Great Plains Integration manager and do it in-house or with minimal help from external consultant. If Integration Manager license seems to be expensive and you have SQL expertise in your IT group - you could your programmer populate master tables: GL00100, RM00101, RM00102, PM00200

• Open & Work Data Migration. In Great Plains Accounts Receivables and Accounts Payables invoices have open status if payments are not yet applied to these documents. We recommend you to use integration manager to bring customer and vendor invoices and payments and post them in Great Plains. This way will allow you to save on consulting services and keep good relationship with you Microsoft Business Solutions Partner. We do not recommend using SQL scripts for bringing open data into Great Plains - you will have posting issues, related to incorrect distributions. In other words do not populate such tables as SOP10100, SOP10200 via direct SQL stored procs.

• Historical Data Migration. We recommend stay away from this migration unless it is absolutely necessary - you may have order takers needing immediate access to customer historical records to place new order. In this case having two system: legacy accounting for data lookup and Great Plains for new documents - may not be efficient. Then you do direct historical tables population: SOP30200, SOP30300, etc.

• Data Conversion. Conversion means the process of extracting data from your legacy application and massaging it to be ready to be fed to Great Plains. In case of each specific system you should use specific approach. In case of QuickBooks you simply print reports, save them in text file and massage there - usually in Excel or Lotus 1-2-3. The specific of small accounting applications is proprietary database platform, which makes traditional tools, such as ODBC connection complicated.

Good luck with conversion and migration and if you have issues or concerns - we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com
