The Key to Rapid Muscle Growth

Filed under: Fitness For All, Universe Of Health — admin at 6:43 pm on Friday, October 31, 2008

The key to rapid muscle growth, is to perform all your exercises well outside your comfort zone. If you had performed the barbell curl to the point of complete and momentary exhaustion, instead of “copping out” at the tenth. Then your biceps muscles would be forced to work harder than normal. Much harder. As a result, they would grow and build size rapidly. This is the most effective way to build muscle fast.

What matters here is not the number of repetitions performed beyond the initial ten. What’s most important is that you understand the reason behind the need to force yourself to work at higher levels of intensity. To produce the greatest possible muscle gains in the shortest possible time frame, you must continually strive to perform at a level well beyond your comfort zone.

If you perform a set of barbell curls until you can no longer lift the bar, no matter how hard you try, or how many pair of strides you split, then you will be involving the highest possible number of muscle fibers. It may not be the total number available, but it will be enough to produce massive increases in muscle size.

Muscle gains produced by a very small amount of intense exercise, will always be much, much more, that that produced by a large amount of low intensity exercise. It is never the quantity of exercise that produces muscle gains, it is always the quality.

Most guys who exercise today are completely ignorant of the need for maximum intensity in their workouts. And as a result, most are blind to their true potential. Even when they are training six days a week, most guys make have no muscle gains to show for it. They just don’t know that they need to workout at a much higher level of intensity. But, in many cases they’re just too damn lazy to do so.

Getting a sexy stomach

Filed under: Fitness For All, Lifestyle Center, Universe Of Health — admin at 3:15 pm on Saturday, May 31, 2008

A flat, sexy stomach complete with six pack abs is the dream for everyone from fitness enthusiasts to the guy who sits on the couch and thinks about exercising. Having an awesome toned stomach is so highly regarded because it is difficult to achieve. In order to get the muscle definition you have to lose that body fat that is covering up your six pack. Everyone is different, but for many, the stomach is one of the last places they lose fat so it can be quite a commitment. To help lose the fat and tone the muscles in your abs there is plenty of abdominal exercise equipment.

One of my favorite workouts is to do some simple crunch variations on a mat at the gym. But when I want to kick it up a notch with abdominal exercise equipment, my first choice is the inflatable exercise ball. These come in various sizes and colors and they can really help improve your workouts if you know how to use them. Doing crunches on the ball forces you to use more muscles because you have to stop the ball from rolling around and keep your balance. There are a variety of other machines at the gym which allow you to set resistance against yourself as you do your crunches, but I like the ball best of all.

Your Guide To The Decongestant Actifed

Filed under: Universe Of Health — admin at 7:06 am on Saturday, May 31, 2008

Actifed is an over-the-counter medicine that works to relieve symptoms from allergies and colds in two ways. The antihistamine properties work to block the body’s production of the biochemical, histamine, which is triggered from allergic reactions to dust, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, trees and grasses.

Actifed also contains a decongestant which works by constricting the blood vessels, while opening up the respiratory and nasal functions. This twofold property of Actifed allows for most aspects of the common cold and allergy to be controlled for several hours at a time. The active ingredients in this drug go by the pharmaceutical names, triprolidine hydrochloride (antihistamine) and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (decongestant).

Some of the symptoms which can be relieved by Actifed include runny nose, sneezing, cough, nasal drip, sinus pressure and watery eyes. This medication is safe for ages as young as 6-years old as long as they have half of the 1 tablet dosage. For children under 6, a doctor’s recommendation is urged by the manufacturer. Each dose of Actifed Cold and Allergy will work from 4 to 6 hours. The makers claim that Actifed works very rapidly to relieve all symptoms of colds and allergies.

For those who are taking MAOI inhibitors, or who have taken them in the past 14 days, Actifed is not safe. Any sedative, or hypnotics can react adversely with this medication as well. People suffering from hypertension or severe coronary artery disease are also advised against this medication. Smaller doses should be used for those who are suffering from prostrate difficulties.

For nursing mothers, the pseudoephedrine and triprolidine ingredients can harm the baby because they can be excreted into breast milk. However, the FDA gives Actifed a category B rating which means that it is not thought to be harmful to pregnant women. Like most over-the-counter medications for allergy and cold relief, Actifed may cause drowsiness.

On the contrary, it may cause nervousness or excitability in children. As with most medications, Actifed also urges anyone who has a doubt about the medication’s compatibility with another drug they are taking, or about a physical condition they have, should immediately consult with their doctor before using.

The white pills are a biconvex shape and include the writing, “Actifed M2A” on the scored side. The bottle comes with 100 tablets. There are also boxes of the medicine which come with 12 or 24 in each. The company Warner-Lambert Consumer Healthcare created Actifed, however, Pfizer markets the brand now. They make several liquid and gel-cap formulas for cold, allergy, and decongestants.

Ergonomics: Workstation Set-up Do’s & Don’ts

Filed under: Universe Of Health — admin at 4:19 am on Saturday, May 31, 2008

Many of us spend most of our workday sitting at a desk working on the computer, talking on the phone, sending & receiving fax messages. Poorly designed workstations can lead to debilitating neck, back and shoulder pain. This article discusses the importance of a good ergonomically designed workstation that does not necessarily require a large investment in time or finances.

The term ERGONOMICS comes from two Greek words: ERGON which means work and NOMOI, which means natural laws. Roughly translated, ergonomics is the study of human posture and positioning as it relates to the work environment. Proper posture is the key to a healthy musculoskeletal system. Good posture leads to proper alignment of the joints supporting the system against the forces of gravity. This allows our muscles to be positioned at their mid-range where they are strongest and under minimal tension. When the body has assumed proper postural alignment less demand on the joints and the muscles is required to perform movements, thus the body conserves energy and performs daily functions more efficiently. Decreased wear and tear on the joints and surrounding structures is also reduced which is a large factor for decreasing early onset of arthritis.

Work Station Set Up It is well documented that low back pain is a leading cause of missed work days in the United States. More than $4 billion dollars are spent on low back pain each year. Various research studies have demonstrated the effect on poor posture leading to low back & neck pain. Extrapolating this information, we see a direct correlation with poor workstation set up in the office. Below represents an inexpensive means of improving your workstation to decrease the affects of poor posture.

The Chair A properly fitted chair is essential considering much of your time is spent sitting. The “PERFECT CHAIR” for everyone does not exist. Each of us has different requirements based on our height, body proportions and anatomical structure. It is important that the chair has the ability to move in a vertical direction. The hips should be positioned slightly higher than the knees. This will take pressure off the lower back. A chair that swivels 360 is also very important so you don’t have to twist your back when reaching away from the frontal plane. Arm rests are very important for taking stress off the shoulder girdle. The elbow should be positioned at a 90 angle, resting the forearm on the rest. This position will relieve tension on the muscles of the neck and shoulder. Lumbar support is imperative for preventing the slouched position. Slouching in a chair occurs when the lower back forms a “C” shape and you end up sitting on your tail bone. This position places a lot of stress on the lumbar discs which can lead to bulging and eventually slippage of the disc out from their central location. This bulging can lead to numbness, tingling a weakness down the legs. If not corrected, permanent damage to the nerves can occur. A thin pillow, towel or foam can be used in the back of the chair to fill in the space between the chair and your lower back. This will assist in sitting upright, maintaining good spinal alignment. Your weight should be distributed over your pelvic floor muscles. Envision a string tied to your belly button with a 5lbs weight on the end pulling you slightly forward toward the floor. There should also be some weight through your legs and feet, further reducing pressure on the spine. If you are in the market for a chair, test out as many as you need until you find one that works. The most expensive chair does not always equate to the one that is best for you. When you find a chair you think is right, sit in that chair for twenty minutes and see how you feel. Giving the chair an honest workout is the only way you will know if it is right for you.

The Desk and keyboard should be at the height of your arms, maintaining a 90 angle at the elbow. There should be enough room under the desk to slide your legs and chair under the desk. If you are using a computer, the monitor should be high enough so that you are looking straight ahead. If you have to look down, this causes you to come out of a neutral alignment and adds stress to the muscles in the back of the neck. It also increases pressure on the cervical discs.

Telephone If you are on the phone frequently, the best investment you will ever make is a HEADSET One of the most common faulty postures is the phone/neck cradle. This is when you are on the phone cradling the receiver between your ear and shoulder. This causes increased muscle tension throughout the neck and often leads to severe neck pain. A headset will free your hands for typing and allow you head to remain in a neutral position.

Other useful tips Never twist your back to reach for something. If you are sitting in a chair that swivels, use your feet to rotate your body. Twisting the spine may lead to increased stress throughout the back and shoulders. If you are working on a fax machine, telephone, keyboard, etc., try to position the equipment in front of you so there is no twisting required. Finally, try not to sit for a prolonged period of time. You should stand up every half hour just to get the blood flowing through your neck, back & legs. Stand up and stretch by walking around a bit. This will relieve tension from your system and reduce overall stress.

Tinnitus: Therapy? You are the Cure!

Filed under: Universe Of Health — admin at 6:44 pm on Thursday, May 22, 2008

How much screaming will you tolerate before taking decisive action.

I have learnt to preach to the choir in my ears. I did so because there came a time a when I realized that no one and nothing was going to rid me of my tinnitus.

Just a small reminder of some of the therapies I have tried in order to find some peace and quite in my life: Acupuncture, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, infusions, Valium, Anti-depressants, orthodontic treatment, hearing aids, masking aids, “Tinnitus Re-Training” program, etc. I was asked to wear a specially designed corset to strengthen my back. I was asked to wear a brace by an orthodontic specialist. I have been advised to take Botox® and now I am being advised to try a new “Herbal Tinnitus Formula” which may or may not help relieve Tinnitus. To add to all this, I spent at least 6 weeks in a Tinnitus clinic for rehabilitation measures. I have been off work for almost 1 year and finally lost my job due to my absence.

Written down it all looks very dramatic and all in all, a pretty long story to tell.

These are the negative aspects I had to learn to accept and forget. These elements are history and must stay that way.

The most common thing that most Tinnitus victims share is the fact we will do practically anything to get rid of the screaming in our ears. We will believe anything we are told and follow all instructions. We believe because we trust what we are hearing and we all look forward to the day when our Tinnitus is gone.

Unfortunately we are often left in despair and frustration when we realize that the above therapies don’t work and in 90 % of all cases, have to admit that our Tinnitus is going to be a part of our every day lives. This is hard to accept for anyone.

If you can established and accept this fact then you will become aware that the only way out of Tinnitus oblivion you’re your own will. The cure lies within yourself.

Without stepping on too many toes, I must admit that the medical field did absolutely nothing to ease my Tinnitus. There are of course many theories as to why we get tinnitus and how to treat it but at the end of the day there isn’t much that common medicine can do for us.

There is away out of this hell and the only person that will make it happen is you. Ask yourself what you would do to get rid of your own Tinnitus. We have already established that we would do anything to rid ourselves of this torture.

Tinnitus can be ignored. It’s a simple trick. Like most tricks it has to be learnt and practiced.

One of my biggest dreams was learning to play the Didgeridoo. I went out and brought one and tried to teach myself to play it. After much frustration and days of trying to get a sound out of it, I finally succeeded. I got a looooong good sound out of it. It sounded really good. The only problem was that the sound diminished after 10 seconds because I had to breath IN The only sound that comes from a didgeridoo is when you breath OUT. The trick is something known as “circular breathing”. In other words, breathing in and out at the same time. Believe it or not, it’s possible to breathe In and OUT at the same time and still live to tell the story. However, after weeks and weeks of practice, I learnt how to master “circular breathing”.

I hope you can see the point I am trying to make. Learning to ignore Tinnitus is like learning to play the didgeridoo. It needs practice and willpower in able to succeed.

Please let me repeat this phrase once more because it is very important you understand this.

You can learn to ignore Tinnitus if you know how. Anyone can learn to ignore Tinnitus.

Your mind has been finely tuned to ignore things its doesn’t want to accept. This capability is evident in everyone alive. Think carefully, how many things do you forget or ignore because you don’t like them.

Everyday we are confronted with elements we would rather forget.

Tinnitus is another one of them. Learn to reduce its importancy and concentrate more on enjoying quality time.

Its absolutely vital you start realizing that Tinnitus is NOT a disease. You are not sick and you are not suffering from a mental disorder! You must get your life back on track again and start enjoying your life.

Tinnitus is a power that can be manipulated. Haven’t you been manipulated enough already? Isn’t it time you got yourself back into the driving seat and stated taking control again.

You can’t let something so unimportant as Tinnitus control your life. This defies all logic!

I did the same and managed to change my lifestyle completely. I stopped smoking I lost 50 pounds in weight. I started to do work outs and go jogging I stopped worrying about Tinnitus In fact…I stopped worrying about things I couldn’t change I wrote an e book and created a website devoted to living with Tinnitus.

All these things I did myself. No help from anyone .I used Tinnitus as a base of energy and manipulated it to meet my own needs.

You know what?…I still have the choir in my ears and it is still loud at time, but here again so is life. The only difference now is that I am the preacher and I am in control.

Happy preaching!

Mark Goeder-Tarant lived under the spell of Tinnitus for almost 6 years before realizing that only HE held the key to success. He is now dedicated to supporting and helping other Tinnitus victims.

of Senior Approved Services, Barbara Mascio.

Seniors and their family members completing the survey welcomed
the opportunity to add comments to the survey. The adult son of

help. I am so grateful for the excellent and loving support
provided for my mother.”

A couple currently receiving services offered, “We are a couple
of elderly people and our needs change rapidly. Carefree has
made all the difference for us, without them, I honestly don’t
know what we’d do except have to go to a home somewhere.”

The adult daughter of one of the seniors wrote, “From the
beginning of their service, they have been helpful and
cooperative in taking care of my mother who has dementia and is
wheelchair bound.”

Carefree is making a positive impact on the lives of seniors. As
another client says, “Everyone that has come in to our home has

Health Insurance - To Take or Not to Take: is it worth the risk?

Filed under: Universe Of Health — admin at 8:29 pm on Thursday, May 15, 2008

Unlike in Canada and parts of Europe, like Germany and The UK,
where most health care costs are supported by the government,
most healthy, mentally sound Americans below 65 usually have to
rely on their own resources to manage personal health care
funding. For most U S citizens, this means building some health
insurance into their general personal financial plan.

Nevertheless, over a period of time the costs of health care
insurance mount up, and the total cost can be unbelievable. The
question is should you take out health insurance? Is it worth
the risk not to? Obviously, there isn’t an easy answer to these
questions, but there are many things you should take into
account before coming to a decision about your future health
care insurance.

Firstly, almost 15% (around 44 million) US citizens are not
covered by any health insurance. Many of these individuals
belong to poor families who are not eligible for for Medicaid,
employment-based health insurance and have been refused or can’t
afford personal cover. If you are thinking of getting individual
health care insurance cover, make sure you’re aware that the
costs are usually higher and less user-friendly than plans
sponsored by employers.

There are many types of personal or individual private health
care insurance available and it’s easy to get confused about
what kind of health insurance you should buy, and how much cover
you should have. You may think you don’t need a few hundred
thousand dollars worth of medical insurance cover, but think
about the cost of one hospital visit if you needed a common,
major procedure like heart surgery or even minor surgery to
remove tonsils or impacted wisdom teeth. Slight complications
can result in a huge medical bill.

If you are lucky enough to get a health benefits package with
your employer, you will be accepted under the company’s plan
whatever the state off your health. But when you apply for
individual cover, those guarantees do not apply and you may not
gete the cover you need, even by trying for reduced benefits.
The same applies when renewing your health care insurance. If
you are employed and covered under a company plan, you will be
able to renew your coverage as necessary, even if you are ill.
Most individual plans have no guarantee that your policy will
not be cancelled.

There are differences between employee and individual insurance
with regard to limitations and portability. If you have an
existing medical condition when you apply for job-related
medical cover, there is a limit of around a year to a eighteen
months on what can be counted ‘against’ you. With individual
cover however, limits are prescribed by the state, and vary
enormously between states. Generally, you may not be eligible
for cost cover related to a pre-existing medical condition for
the entire duration of your policy.

With portability, depending on the state in which you live, it’s
possible that you may not receive credit for past cover. This
means that even if you qualify for medical insurance, you may
have to wait for the whole of the pre-existing condition
exclusion period.

Whether you choose job-related, employer-sponsored health
insurance or a private, personal plan, health care insurance
will cost you much money, particularly if you if you have any
ongoing medical issues and/or have a family. tObviously, The
total amount will depend on your particular circumstances. It’s
possible, of course, that you may never need medical attention,
in which case you might consider the cost of health care
insurance as money wasted.

However, at some time in our lives, most of us need medical
attention. Even people with a healthy, positive approach to life
have unexpected health issues, accidents and broken limbs. You
can never forsee these events, or how severe they will be, but
without sufficient financial means or a good health care
insurance plan, you could become destitute. Are you willing to
take that risk? Being unable to pay for medical services or
products that you or a family member may need? Money spent on
premiums must be a consideration when deciding whether to buy
health care insurance. However, before you make a final
decision, there are many other crucial elements to consider.

Flatfeet in Children: When Are They A Problem?

Filed under: Universe Of Health — admin at 6:59 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008

There are high arch feet and low arch feet and many different foot types in between. Many individuals have flatfeet, but do not have foot problems. All of us are born with flatfeet and some of the greatest athletes have flatfeet. But, flatfeet are a problem when the arch completely collapses in combination with excess inward rotation in the foot. This type of flatfoot causes excess stress on the joints, ligaments and tendons in the foot and ankle. If not treated appropriately, tendon and joint problems will develop.

Flatfeet are normal in infants and the arch will not start to develop until between four and eight years of age. Up until this time, all children will have flatfeet. Many children under the age of 4 may have excessively flatfeet and excess rotation in their feet. How do you tell the difference? The following list may indicate that your toddler’s flatfeet are a problem:

1. Your child is over 15 months of age and has not started walking.

2. Your child started walking around 12 months but seems to prefer crawling.

3. Your child is between the ages of 2-4 and complains of foot pain or leg pain. In many instances, this leg pain is confused with growing pains.

4. The wear on your child’s shoe is uneven.

5. Your child’s arch is touching the ground and the ankles look like they are rolling in, bringing the knees together.

For toddlers, the typical treatment is a kiddie orthotic. This is a pre-made orthotic which comes in different sizes. It will fit into any of your child’s shoes and should be comfortable for them. This will help stabilize their foot while they are walking. In severe cases, or in children ages 3 and 4, a custom made orthotic may be necessary. A custom made orthotic is a device that involves taking a mold of the foot, typically done with plaster, but sometimes done with foam. A device is made with specific corrections for your child’s foot and looks like a plastic insert. This insert can slip into the shoe and can be switched from shoe to shoe.

Children can wear the same insert for up to 2 shoe sizes, then a new pair must be made. Although the insert will not change the way the foot develops, it will support the foot and allow for a more normal walking pattern. In some cases, children only need the orthotic during the first few years, and after the arch develops, the orthotic is no longer needed. In most cases, children will not “outgrow” their flatfeet.

As the arch develops between 4 and 8 years of age, the child’s body goes through numerous changes. The bones grow in length while the leg and thigh bones are rotating. During these years it may be difficult to determine if the flatfeet will become a problem or not. One of best indicators of a problem is pain. Children should not have pain in their feet. They should be able to run around with their friends or in an organized sport without any pain. If your child is having foot, ankle or leg pain, make sure they see a podiatrist.

Young children between eight and thirteen years may have flatfeet, but not complain of any pain. This is a common occurrence in this age group, especially if the children are not competitive in any sports. Look for the following:

1. The arch touches the floor and the ankles and feet rotate in.

2. The knees are very close together (knock-knees).

3. Shoes are worn out within 3 months.

4. Wear pattern on the shoe is toward the inside (big toe side).

5. Your child’s gait is bouncy or looks awkward.

6. Your child seems slower than his or her friends or shows a lack of interest in sporting activities despite being athletic.

If your child shows any of these signs it is necessary to visit a podiatrist to be evaluated. In many cases, small problems that are developing in this age group can lead to more severe problems down the road. Generalized ankle pain is the most common complaint in children this age with flatfeet. Typically, they will be able to run and play sports, but find that they have a deep, achy pain in and around their ankle when they are done. Children this age have a very difficult time expressing the type of pain they are experiencing and when they experience it. Writing down when the pain happens and where is occurs will help your doctor during the visit.

Over fourteen years of age, the growth slows in girls and over the next few years the growth plates in the feet fuse. Boys will have continued growth until 16 to 18 years of age. Children in this age group will typically complain of pain. The most common problem in children with flatfeet in this age group is tendonitis. The pain is either at the back of the heel, or at the inside of the arch. Sometimes the foot and ankle are stiff and sore in the morning, when first stepping down. Walking up and down stairs or hills, squatting or walking on uneven surfaces will cause more pain in these tendons.

Treatment of tendonitis involves rest, ice and immobilization for a minimum of two weeks, but two months can be a common recovery time. When these conditions develop as a result of flatfeet, it is necessary to be fit with orthotics to prevent the problem from occurring again. Not every foot needs a custom made orthotic. There are many prefabricated orthotics that work well. A prefabricated orthotic is not the same as an insert. An insert slips into the shoe and will provide comfort, cushion and a little support. In some cases, inserts purchased at the drugstore will help alleviate some arch or heel pain and give relief to sore, tired feet. But, an insert is not an orthotic. Orthotics are devices which fit into the shoe and aid in foot function.

The most important difference is an orthotic controls abnormal motion and corrects foot function, while an insert will only provide cushion and comfort. Pre-fabricated orthotics can be found at your local sports store and will help many individuals with flatfeet. They are much cheaper than custom-made orthotics, but they will wear out in 1-2 years. A custom-made orthotic is custom to each foot and corrections are built-in to help the foot function. They are designed to keep stress off the ligaments and tendons in the arch and designed to distribute the pressure evenly while walking. The cover material on the custom-made orthotic may need to be changed every one to two years, but the orthotic itself will last ten years. As expected, custom-made orthotics are much more expensive than prefabricated orthotics or inserts.

In summary, all infants have flatfeet, but more severe flatfeet in this group can become a problem. The arch develops between four and eight years of age and predicting long term foot problems in this group can be difficult. Many children, teenagers and adults have flatfeet, yet no foot problems. Therefore, not all flatfeet need to be treated. But, children with foot, ankle or leg pain and flatfeet should be evaluated by a podiatrist. For children with flatfeet and foot pain, custom made orthotics are essential to treatment of the foot problem and for prevention of problems in the future.

4d baby scans - baby ultrasound.co.uk

Filed under: Children Fun, Medical Parlor, Universe Of Health — admin at 7:58 am on Friday, April 18, 2008

The method know as 3d ultrasound is used during early pregnancy, it can provide 3d pictures of the fetus. Most times these ultrasound pictures are collated and joined together to produce a “4d ultrasound”.

Three dimensional scans works in a similar manner to the normal ultrasound methods except that the ultrasound pulses can be directed from multiple directions. The waves can be reflected back and captured and provide information to construct a 3d picture in much the same way as 3d pictures. 3d ultasound scanning was first developed by olaf von ramm and stephen smith in america.

It’s important to understand that sonologists all over the world always pictured 3d images of anatomy or pathology in their minds while doing 2d scans. However, until recently it was not possible to do this kind of reconstruction on on patient information using ultasound scanning. With the introduction of 4d baby scans for the first time allowed us a peek into the mechanics of thinking of a sonologist and so allowing us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

4d ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. There is no data to suggest harm due to 3d ultasound scanning, its use in none essential situations needs to be undertaken with an understanding of the risks involved.

It’s important to understand that sonologists worldwide have always pictured three-dimensional images of the body in their minds whilst doing 2d scans. However, until recently it was difficult to do this type of reconstruction on on information using ultasound scanning. The advent of baby scans for the first time allowed us a view into the thinking of a sonologist and hence letting us view the images on the ultrasound machine.

3d/4d ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. There is no data to suggest harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in non-medical situations needs to be undertaken with the understanding of the risks.
